Is Moshiach a Jewish Concept?
Chabad.info will be posting a twenty week "series", that will deal with the basic questions on the belief in a Moshiach and messianic era, completely based on Torah sources authored by Rabbi Gershon Avtzon. This week's question IS THE MESSIAH A JEWISH CONCEPT?

IS THE MESSIAH A JEWISH CONCEPT?

For many people, the very mention of Moshiach (messiah, resurrection, Moshiach appearing after disappearing for awhile) is an automatic turnoff. They say, that it sounds too similar to Christianity.

We therefore have to start with a disclaimer. It is not our fault that there are similar imitations to our name brand. Being that Christianity was created by Jews - and to recruit Jews - it should not be shocking that they have adopted some of our basic beliefs. For one to discount an idea as a "Christian-non Jewish concept" without checking Jewish sources, is like giving credit to a new company, without seeing if they stole patents from an older company.

[ To put things into perspective: The Rambam (Maimonides) wirtes (Hilchos M'lachim chapter 12) that the reason the Hashem allowed the idea of a "Christian Messiah" in the forst place, is so that the idea of redemption should not be a foreign idea in this world. when the true Jewish redeemer will come, the nations of the world will say " Right idea, Wrong man".]

What does Judaism have to say about "Moshiach"?

I will start with a few quotes:

" The entire world was created for the era of Moshiach" (Talmud, Sahedrin 98a)

On the verse in Bereishis (Chapter 1 verse 2) " Before the creation, the spirit of Hashem was hovering over the water", the commentaries (Baal Haturim and others)  explain that this is referring to the spirit of Moshiach.

When the Rambam (in his commentary for Mishnayos Sanhedrin, Perek Chelek) enumerates the 13 principles of Jewish faith,  he lists - number 12 and 13 - the Belief in Moshiach and the resurrection.

The Rambam (in Hilchos Melachim chapter 11)  writes " One that does not believe in Moshiach, or await his arrival is a denier of the books of prophets and the five books of Moshe , for they are full with references about Moshiach".

[ A perspective: The Lubavitcher Rebbe explains the above passage of the Rambam in a revolutionary way ( Sicha Acharei 5751): It is not only that there are many passages in the Torah that speak about Moshiach, rather EVERY passage in Torah speaks about Moshiach. The differences in the passages are only whether that speak openly about Moshiach, or does one have to look in the commentaries and find the connection.

One Chassid, Rabbi Dubov of NJ, took it upon himself to prove the above and has printed over 30 books - Yalkut Moshiach U'Geulah Al HaTorah, Kehot publications, showing how literally every verse is  connected  with Moshiach.

The above leads to another perspective: Our sages say (Zohar,Part 2, page 161) " Hashem looked into the Torah and created the world". If every verse in Torah is conncted with Moshiach, then every part of creation is connected with moshiach! ]

From the above we see clearly, the belief in Moshiach is a central Jewish belief. Next week, we will address the question:
Why is Moshiach a central Jewish belief?

4. I have a question:
anonymous
B'H - How does one explain that 18 years have gone by since the Rebbe stated that Moshiach's arrival is no longer a dream of the distant future but, rather, an imminent event that we need to internalize and get ready for?

5. Imminince
Mendel saull
Yitzchak avininu new the ketz, but since it was thousands of years away he was not permitted to reveal it lest we would despair of its "untimeliness". Now is its time; the navi doreinu the Rebbe MHM said it as a prophecy that is unfolding before our eyes. What does decades of waiting mean compared to millennia?

6. ad mosai
your emeinence
Until when do we wait for the rebbe's words to come true if he said that "ut ut mamash...." maybe its time for us to say that we were'nt raui and we have to keep working and look forward and not backward???

7. to answer all the questions

look at http://video.moshiach.ru/Rebe/28_sivan_5751.wmv. have we done this? so what do you want from the Rebbe MH"M?

BS"D The Rebbe's Prophecy: "L'alter l'Geula Heenay...etc" is a foreseen event. There were no conditions placed upon it. Whether we were or are "raui" is entirely irrelevant to what the Rebbe foresaw. The Rebbe saw and conveyed a fact of the future...Moshiach's arrival!!! What we have is a paradox and a most interesting Halachic issue on our hands here. A Novi Emes gave over a Positive Prophecy re: Moshiach's imminent arrival. Rambam states in Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah that such a Positive Prophecy must and will be fulfilled by Hashem. The key issue is: What is the Halachic shiur of the word "imminent"? If I owed you $400,000 and didn't pay you after 18 years but then did...would that still qualify as "imminent"? There are more questions: Is Moshiach's foreseen imminent arrival a slow process or does the Rebbe suddenly walk back into 770? Something has to give here. What is most interesting is the global economic collapse. America is going broke. Nations are financially crippled. This seems to myself to be the fulfillment of what the Rebbe stated about Bilaam's Prophecy which foretold the downfall of the nations at the time of the Final Redemption. So I respectfully suggest that we do not cut rope with the Rebbe's Prophecy. In fact another Rambam Halacha states that a Novi Emes must be believed and obeyed. So cutting rope is not a Halachic option. Esau falls and Yakov rises.

9. to dear Rabbi Moshe Yess (and all others)

Why are you looking at the downfall of the non-Jews as a proof? That's a very negative approach to a totally positive nevua of the Rebbe MH"M. Look at comment #7 and please look at this video of the Rebbe MH"M: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Aek9at_Dfg. Ad Mosai is not on the Rebbe MH"M and his Mishaleach, ad mosai goes on all of US! When are we going to admit, desire and proclaim that Geula is lireally here? How can we open our eyes and live Geula without doing what the Rebbe asks of us on 28 Sivan 5751? When are we going to wake up and realize that the prophecy you are talking about is not in the future - it's the ONLY TRUE REALITY NOW! Yehi Hamelech Hamoshiach!

10. new to lubavitch
am haaretz
I may be an am haaretz but I am new to cahabad so please explain to me something I don't understand about the rebbe being moshiach is that I always thought that Moshiach will be from someone that is alive?

11. HERE

The Geulah is "here" is said in present tense. "All sparks have been elevated." This is not a future event that needs working towards."Acustom yourselves to dance towards the Geula" That is already here, but where are you, the chassanah has started and everybody is turning up late.

12.

we gota start celebration the PRESENT redemption now! yechi hamelech vehamalka!

don't call yourself an am haaretz (unless you want to be one). any question is a good question, as the Torah says the bashful one never learns. check out http://honk4joy.com/way-up.php (or the whole site for that matter). b'hatzlocha
