This Sunday, the NCFJE-Chabad of Mineola hosted it's 17th annual Chanukah Telethon. The brother in law and sister of Gabi Holtzberg was honored with lighting the Menorah. One of the highlights of the event was a Kosher Chupah, for a Jewish couple which took place during the Telethon.

Latke-eating contest
Bill Lust will be stuffing himself with as many latkes as he can on television next month to help raise money for a Long Island chabad house that has received thousands of phone calls for financial help this year. “There are a lot of hungry people we’ll be thinking of and hopefully can help,” said Lust, a security consultant in Queens. Mineola Chabad vandalized with swastikas

Rabbi Anchelle Perl wasn't at Congregation Beth Shalom Chabad in Mineola on Friday morning as he usually is, as the temple was closed for the Fourth of July weekend. Instead, he got a call unlike any he's ever received: Someone had sprayed two large, bright orange swastikas on the synagogue's front doors. "As soon as I came and saw it was a swastika, I realized this was a bias crime," said Perl, leader of the congregation for the past 20 years.

Rabbi to Bury Chabad 'Time Capsule'

habad of Mineola will bury a Time Capsule documenting today's Jewish life on Wednesday, April 8th at 8:15am. This date is so special; for on April 8, 2009, the eve of Passover, Jews around the world will rise early, gaze at the sun and recite the least-frequently-recited blessing in Judaism: Birkat HaChamah. In honor of this once in 28 years event, Rabbi Anchelle Perl, director of the Chabad of Mineola, will bury a special Time Capsule at the cornerstone of the Synagogue, scheduled immediately following the Birkat HaChamah.

Live: Chanukah Telethon
The Chabad of Mineola Chanukah Telethon was held on Monday evening. The event featured blends of joyful song and dance with heartfelt emotional appeals with a lineup of political leaders, sports and entertainment figures, and representatives of our life saving programs. This year's Telethon, honoring the 30th Anniversary of ongoing Community Service, was also simulcast on the Internet.

Jack Martins Gets Send-Off To Israel

Mineola Mayor Jack Martins is on his way to visit Israel and he received a supportive send-off from the Long Island Jewish community. Rabbi Anchelle Perl of Chabad of Mineola and Rabbi Levi Gurkov of Chabad of Oceanside presented Mayor Martins with a written message from the Long Island congregations to be delivered to the Western Wall. They also presented donations to be delivered to the poor in Jerusalem. Concerning his trip, Mayor Martins stated: “I have become very close to the Chabad in my home village of Mineola and have had the privilege of working with Rabbi Perl on a number of good causes. I can’t wait to visit the holy places which he talks about with such reverence and enthusiasm.”

Traveling Rabbis Teach Kosher Pickling

More than two dozen people gathered on a recent morning in the basement of Congregation Beth Sholom Chabad for what a rabbi billed as a "pickle-palooza." As the clamor subsided, a young man sporting a long beard and a black apron that declared "Real Men Don't Use Recipes" announced the start of "the kosher pickle experience." Part carnival barker, part Borscht Belt comedian, Rabbi Mendy Margolin was bringing his road show to Mineola to teach these mostly elderly students the proper way to make a crispy, spicy pickle. "Prepare your mouths," shouted the 25-year-old Margolin. "Prepare your souls. Get ready for kosher pickle-palooza!"

L.I. Students In Solidarity with V. Tech
On Thursday May 10th, a brief ceremony will be held on the steps of the Supreme Court of Nassau County in Mineola to honor the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre. In the spirit of unity and shared grief, the students who are being presented the Good Deed Awards for LI Teenagers that same evening, have chosen to memorialize the souls lost in Virginia, in a simple ceremony.

The observance, led by Rabbi Anchelle Perl, will be limited to the reading of the names of the victims, the chiming of a bell, followed by the release of 32 white balloons and hundreds of maroon and orange balloons in Virginia Tech colors.
